Never-Before Published Photo of the Mt. Tamalpias Railway!

July 20, 2008

Discovered in a junk photo bin at a thrift store was this gem of a photo. It was no larger than a wallet-size, and was taken by an unknown photographer. For 25cents it was a bargian!

Mt. Tamalpias Railway terminal atop Mt. Tam.

Note the Arch bridge at the slight left-center of the photograph, where the trains would enter the complex at the top of the mountain.

The Railroad used Shay locomotives to guide the happy tourists up the steep grades and sharp curves. The railroad lasted from the late 1880’s to the 1930’s.
