Depots of Northern Michigan: Marinette, Wisconsin

July 18, 2010

Chicago & Northwestern Marinette Wisconsin Railroad Depot

The Beautiful Chicago & Northwestern (C&NW) depot located in the border town of Marinette, Wisconsin between Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. It’s located right off US-41 in a beautiful section of old Downtown Marinette, on the Menominee River.

From the looks of it, it looks as if it was built in the late Victorian era (1890’s) and subsequently modernized in the 1940’s, at least inside the depot itself. Although passenger service was discontinued in the 1960’s, the depot has remained a railroad crew office and MOW building, even today with the Canadian National.

There are a variety of interesting details that make this depot stand out. From a distance, the telephone-pole mounted radio tower is a neat detail. The overall Queen Anne style Victorian details are appealing as is the half-stone half-brick construction. Most of the windows are original to the structure, except for the modernized trackside entrance which features 1940’s glass brick and round-windowed steel doors.
